A quote from a DOR Alum
instead of: “I’m not a white supremacist. I’m not a racist.”
–responses we so commonly hear or, worse, say of ourselves–
I suggest we start saying, “Not a soul alive today created the system
into which we were all born, but we’re all responsible for it, and,
some of us, because of our white privilege, are more responsible
than others for fixing the problem. ” The first step of the fix is to
stop saying stupid stuff.
The second step is to say, “I have stuff to
work on.” The third step closely follows the other two insights: to recognize
that our nation was founded in the context of white supremacy and that we all have to engage
in dismantling a system that is hurting the planet, as recent
murderous acts of hatred have acutely demonstrated.
The Reverend Dr. Steve J. Crump, minister emeritus, Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge
